Work Satisfaction, Money & Changing Jobs

Work Satisfaction, Money and Changing Jobs

The Canadian Education and Research Institute for Counseling (CERIC) recently sponsored an online perceptions career development and the workplace survey undertaken by Environics Research.  Some interesting survey results:

81% of Canadians are generally satisfied with their jobs

88% like the people they work with

About 40% of Canadians think they are not paid fairly for the work they do

33% of Canadians have plans to leave their current job and it is for one of two reasons 1) dissatisfaction with compensation or 2) they are 30 and under and want more responsibility or work that is closer to their interests.

The secret to resolving dissatisfaction with compensation:

  1. Ensure employees have a sound understanding their total reward package;
  2. Ensure employees know how compensation is determined  and believe that process to be fair
  3. Ensure your compensation package is fair as compared to your comparative marketplace

The secret to resolving responsibility and interest dissatisfaction:

  1. Know your employees’ knowledge, skills, abilities and interests
  2. Collaboratively develop a comprehensive growth and development plan for each employee
  3. Ensure the plan is followed, reviewed and updated regularly
